Sensing My Health

My Students

High blood pressure. Heart murmur. Obesity. COPD. Diabetes. These are terms that my students hear either on the news, at the doctor’s office, or within their own family’s conversations. Many of them have no idea what the terms or conditions refer to other than they deal with personal health.

I would like to explain these medical phrases in a hands-on approach to my anatomy & physiology students, many of who might consider a career in the health sciences.

Because we are in a very rural setting (only one doctor in the county and no pharmacy within 30 miles), I would like to give my students a taste of the excitement that the medical field has to offer. By exposing them to some common health issues, I hope that they will choose to explore the job opportunities within this career path by seeking careers as physician's assistants, EMT responders, laboratory technologists, athletic trainers or one of several other aides to the local medical staff. I would hope that some would even aspire to higher goals, including dentists, pharmacists, and optometrists. Even if the students don't choose to pursue a medical career, I feel that they should still be in tune with their own body's health and what those who are in the medical field are talking about in relation to conditions.

My Project

With a body fat analyzer, the students will be able to identify their own percentage body fat and develop an exercise and/or menu plan for weight management. This is where the use of pedometers would be helpful. Because the basic premise of good health has to do with activity level, the student would be able to track his or her daily activity and try to increase this over a period of time. With stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and a spirometer, the students can monitor their heart rates, blood pressures, and lung fitness to determine their risk of heart attacks, the effects of exercise on these measurements, and enhance their understanding of terms such as "hypertension," "irregular heartbeat," "heart murmur," and "vital capacity." Every student should take a course in anatomy & physiology because it is vital that he/she understands the workings of his/her own body and how to make the most of it.

By purchasing the materials for this project, my students will not only be able to live more informed health-conscious lives, but also become the future of health care workers in a time that these career opportunities are booming.
