My Students

Help us cope! My students live in chaotic worlds and come to school angry or depressed. They lack the skills to manage this stress and often blow out in the classroom.

The high school students in my social development class have behavior disabilities and are enrolled in at least one class in special education.

They struggle with aggression or depression and are in need of strategies to manage their behavior so they can succeed in school and in life. My students find it easier to express their emotions artistically than with words. This year, I found that my students respond strongly to creative projects. Beginning the day with a calming art activity allowed my students to discuss their concerns, socialize, express their emotions, and begin to build the self-esteem necessary to change their behavior.

My Project

My students often arrive at school agitated and require a calm supportive environment to gather themselves for the day. They are able to find peace and tranquility when expressing themselves creatively but are not ready to manage an art class. Providing creative experiences in a calm atmosphere will allow my students to discuss difficult topics, begin to learn new strategies for managing their stress, set goals for their growth, and develop skills to interact with others appropriately.

This project is important because many students with behavioral disabilities drop out of high school.

If I can motivate them and encourage them to develop alternative strategies for managing their lives, they will have a chance at success.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
