This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of the challenges facing my fifth graders are living in a very poor neighborhood. Most of the students are Spanish with one parent working a seasonal job. Many of the homes have pests that are difficult for parents to get rid of due to not having to lot of money. Only three of my fifth grade

My fifth grade classrooms contain about 98% Spanish speaking students.

At this time there are 35 fifth graders in my classroom where I teach Language Arts and Science. There are ten students in my classroom that are two grades behind. Those ten students are not reading at the fifth grade level and some want to join gangs. Some students have little respect for themselves and for other people. This is a k 8 school with most of the 7th and 8th graders being two year behind in school. We have some gang problems and students are absent a lot. This is an inter city school with very little money for technology and basic school supplies.

My Project

The resource that I’m requesting is a computer mobile computing notebook. With this computing notebooks my students will be able to answer questions on the ecosystem of the Asian Carp. My goal is for all students to have a computer notebook to find data on the Asian Carps that may effect fish life in the Great Lakes. With the information from their WebQuest, students will create a survey to be passed out to students in grades 6 and 7. Students will use the answers from the survey to create three different kinds of graphs to show response. This project will improve students’ science and reading skills. All information will be presented on display boards in graphs on family night.

This project is very important to my fifth grade students because they will learn how to use a laptop computer to find answer to questions.

Students will learn about the different ecosystems of the Asian Carp and understand why they would be able to live in the Great Lakes. Students will learn how to create three different kinds of graphs on the computer showing data collected from the Asian Carp survey. Students will learn how to work as a team in finding information using the Internet.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
