I Love Reading!: Encouraging LD Students to Read and Love It

My students need a leveled library, a leveled library storage cart, Readers Response notebooks and 3 additional resources.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book you couldn't put down? My students struggle with finding books that are at their just right reading level. Many of my students are two to three grade levels behind their peers and they need to be showered with books and activities.

I work with 4th and 5th grade students with special needs.

My school is in an urban portion of a large city. Our population is mainly African American and Hispanic students who are on free or reduced lunch. I have many students with learning disabilities that are reading two to three grade levels behind their peers. They have little motivation to read and I struggle with finding ways to encourage their reading and peak their interests.

My Project

I am requesting a leveled classroom library for my students. The leveled library contains books that are appropriate for their reading level and designed for high interest topics that get kids engaged in reading. The set includes 80 titles that are perfect for differentiated instruction. I am also requesting additional bins so that I can add more books in the future and a cart for moving the books easily for access for the students. I am also requesting a Literature Activity Center set which has projects the students can do independently on each of their books. I am requesting additional Read and Prompt cards to help the students with oral and written response to their books. I am also requesting additional Readers Response notebooks for my students to use to respond to their stories in writing. I believe these materials would help create a strong and differentiated reading center within my classroom that would allow my students to explore books that are at their learning level.

Your donation to my literacy center would make a huge impact on the students I teach.

My students are identified special needs who are two to three grade levels behind their peers. They need highly engaging reading materials to keep their motivation and to grow their love for reading. All students should have access to books that they can read and that inspire them to learn.
