My Students

"Mr, my hands are cramping!" I hear that a couple times a day. My students love photography, shooting, editing, printing, and posting. They hate their hands cramping up using the track pads on the laptops. Aside from the pain, the trackpad is limiting their ability to improve their art.

Our school is the school of misfit toys.

We are entirely unique. Originally designated as an alternative high school, our presence was met by the elementary school parents (both new schools being built in 2001, next to each other) with some hesitation. So we were told, during the first week of school, that we were not going to be an alternative school. That was after two years of planning a new alternative school. After 8 years, we now know who we are. A school for kids who got left out, left behind, and dismissed. 170 kids, 12 teachers, and our school motto, "Learning, Caring, Hope" We are the school where all kids are guaranteed an opportunity to get involved in the things that only the cool kids get involved at the big schools. School government, band (marimbas, steel drums) photography, art, track, and of course, academics. We believe in relationships and connections first. At our school, kids reconnect with society in ways they had given up on.

My Project

The kids who come to my room are the nerdy, black clothes art kids. They write poetry, listen to the Cure, and make photographs. These tablets will help them improve their ability to create works of art that get hung on walls, given as gifts, posted on line, and inspire them to dream. The kids love this stuff, are pretty good at it, and can only become better by having another tool at their disposal.

This project is important because these kids matter.

Our school came into being by a beautiful mistake. We were supposed to be something, then we told we could not be that. We stumbled for years, then became what we had to be, based on who came through the door. Our school is the only school that I know of like it. No public school district is brave enough to open a new school and say, "wait to see who comes, then change to meet their needs. But we did.
