My Students

We're just in the first grade and we have to learn vocabulary words and how to count money and map skills and reading skills and contractions! Let's find a fun way to do this. We have the answer! It's a homework helper DVD!

I teach a classroom of first graders in a pre-K, kindergarten, first grade building.

These students are eager to learn and excited about technology. Approximately 70% of our students are low income and our school has very limited funds for technology. But my children love technology and it really motivates them to learn.

My Project

Students have to learn their basic skills like reading and math. We have created a multi-level Homework Helper DVD which includes math practice ( counting money, recognizing numbers, basic addition and easy geometry); literacy skills (letter/sound recognition, vocabulary, fluency practice, contractions, compound words and word families) and basic map skills. My students currently practice these basic skills in a fun format on a computer. However, due to our low income status, most of my students do not have a computer at home. So we have converted these activities to a DVD format that most students will be able to use to practice at home. Now the challenge is to get them into the students' hands. A DVD burner will allow me to copy these fun and exciting practice activities for each student this year and for years to come.

Supporting this project will make it possible for me to provide each student's family with their own copy of a DVD that they can use to practice these skills at home.

I believe that when students have this daily practice at home with their families they will master these basic skills much quicker. An added bonus may be that other family members will also benefit from this Homework Helper DVD.
