My Students

Chapter books are scary for second graders! With a variety of fantastic chapter books, we can hook my class on books. A book shelf is needed just for the chapter books so they will be easily accessible. A VCR/DVD player will be used to show a video of the books read together in class.

My students are precious and love to read.

As second graders, they are transitioning from simple story books to chapter books. This is a terrifying step for young children. We are a rural school and most of my students have never been to a library outside of school. We have a children's library next door, but it is seldom utilized by the community. It is up to the teachers to encourage a love for reading. Second graders are still enthusiastic about learning and want to do their best. If we can develop a strong foundation in reading, the students will more likely be successful in math, science, and social studies.

My Project

Having several chapter books for the students to read will help them overcome their fear of "big, scary books." Once the students have completed their first chapter book and realize they are capable of comprehending the story, they will be hooked on reading forever! A good quality series of chapter books will encourage the students to continue reading and they will become life long readers! I am requesting chapter books from three different series, a bookshelf to display them appropriately, and a VCR/DVD player to view the video version of the book. Once the children have completed reading a book together in class, it is wonderful to be able to share the video version of the book. Students love to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the book and the movie. They also enjoy discussing how the picture they had in their head is different (or similar) to the video.

Chapter books are important in the development of lifelong readers.

Having chapter books readily available when the students are ready to read to them is crucial. A book shelf will allow the students to keep the books neat and orderly as well as separate from the story books. After reading a book together in class, we will be able to watch the video version of the book. Please help us expand our classroom library!!!
