My Students

Most of my students struggle to find a book that "looks cool" or is about their interests. The girls seem to have no problem, but my boys struggle. Please help me give them a selection that will target their interests and they will be urging all their buddies to read too!

I come from a rural district with limited funding for the school library.

The nearest sufficient public library is over 30 minutes away. I am a high school English teacher who is trying to instill a desire to read in her students - in order to read well, you need to practice. Many of these students struggle to read, let alone find a book that they are interested in and my boys have the most disadvantage.

My Project

I've seen books that I purchased for my classroom with my own money catch on like a wildfire. I have barely seen the books since I've purchased them - they're only back in my hands for an hour before another student hears from a friend how good the book was and they just, "have to read it". I can't afford to keep my students reading like this without your help. If you can catch a kid who "hates to read" and grab him with a book that is interesting to him, he'll keep looking for more. Right now, we are so limited that the boys fly through one book they enjoy and get disappointed that there aren't more to follow. I want to be able to keep putting books in their hands and hear them tell me how, "I hate to read, but I actually read this one!". Those are the most rewarding words I can hear.
