Resolved: Journalistic Research Saves Policy Debate!

My students need a laptop computer so that they may do online research of journalistic and other sources during debate tournaments.

My Students

As a new teacher last year in a phenomenal school, I was approached to sponsor a fledgling debate club. This year my school will send two teams-the only two teams from my city-to the National Urban Debate League Tournament in NYC, NY. The debate team needs a laptop for on site research.

My students live in two worlds.

The first is a world of wonder, of imagination, of achievement, of not just potential but the hard academic work and persistence it takes to turn potential into reality. The second world is of economic hardship, a world in which an impoverished school district has no funds for new textbooks or after-school activity buses or even possibly summer school. Somehow, through some combination of determined students and dedicated parents, teachers, and administrators, we graduate over 97% of our students, with 99% of those attending university, some as the first generation in their families to do so. Our school is consistently on US News and World Report's top 100 high schools in the nation, and this year made Newsweek's top 100 as well. It was the only Missouri school to do so. I am daily inspired by how hard these young people work, even as they juggle 300 hours of community service and extra-curricular activities.

My Project

I sponsor the Debate Team, a team that competes locally in urban policy debate, and that, in its second year of existence, has earned the opportunity to send 2 two-person teams to compete nationally against other urban policy debate leagues. The laptop computer that I am requesting would allow one of those teams to research journalistic, governmental, and policy think-tank sources during the actual debate, and so remain competitive against more established schools. The computer would also allow the team to "flow" the arguments more efficiently and to organize evidence for effective analysis and interpretation. This year's policy debate resolution focuses on federal spending for social services; next year's resolution will address US troop deployment in the Middle East. The computer notebook will enable these bright and competitive young people the chance to analyze the most current journalistic and governmental sources, and to do so in the midst of the impressive pressure of debate.

My students and I have been overwhelmed by the caring generosity shown by DonorsChoose.org contributors, and the requested laptop will help put our school's debate team on the national map for years to come.

I--and I hope you--can only imagine what future journalist or policy maker or Senator might be in the making, in no small part due to the opportunity of technological access to the world.
