My Students

Never mind Twitter and blogging, my students need technology basics such as this HP laptop, to research content areas, evaluate websites for accuracy, type and publish their literacy work, and to visit interactive websites to build their base of knowledge in math, science, and social studies.

My class of diverse and deserving students attend a public school where the majority of children are eligible for free lunch.

While I have been fortunate enough to have a single laptop donated to the room for their use, the reality is that 27 of them need to become proficient in computer skills and only one can literally type at a time. Imagine if you had to wait for 26 other people to use the computer before it was your turn again! An additional HP laptop would make it possible for my students to build their critical thinking skills as they research topics and analyze the website sources they use (or choose not to use!). Additionally, these 21st century kids need to visit interactive websites so that they can understand social studies world issues and prepare relevant PowerPoint presentations. An HP laptop also provides the class with the ability to review difficult concepts at engaging sites such as Donaterice.com, where they donate rice while they review topics!

My Project

My students are getting ready to go to junior high school with only minutes a day of computer literacy. They need a laptop to prepare them for the grades ahead and the workforce that they will be entering in the not too distant future. A laptop is essential for visual and kinesthetic learners who learn best by seeing and doing. Also, it is a window out of the classroom to the wide range of primary sources and materials available at government websites. Finally, it offers an opportunity for me to differentiate to their readiness levels by installing education software targeted at their individual needs and/or permitting them to visit educational sites.

A laptop is truly not a luxury but a necessity in this age of technology, and not only is it used to promote academic achievement, it can be used by the artists in my classroom to create visual literary responses and by the afterschool chess club to develop their abstract thinking.

If you fund this essential resource it will be treasured not only by this class but the students I teach in the future as well!
