My Students

Have you ever been asked a question that you did not know the answer to? What did you do to find the answer? I encourage my students to branch out and find the answers on their own using resources; but without resources that is like sending them out to a hay stack to find a needle.

My class is made of 20 5th grade students.

We are one of three 5th grades in a low-income school district. As a grade, I teach all three fifth grade classes reading; therefore all 58 students in our grade will benefit from these Encyclopedias! We are a low-income school that cannot afford to give my students this tool that they need. My students are active and curious learners that would greatly benefit from this tool.

My Project

I have a "resource bookshelf" where the students are able to go to help with questions they have. They have a thesauruses and dictionaries on this bookshelf. Yes, these help and we are grateful for them but they do not answer all the questions. I could see my kids getting these encyclopedias off the shelf not only when they have a question but also when they have free time and simply want to learn more. These Encyclopedias would be intriguing books for them to look at. We would be able to do numerous research projects in class. We are currently researching animals and creating animal brochures with our information. Having the encyclopedias in our classroom would be one more tool to help with our research.

This project would open so many doors for my students.

We would be able to research beyond what our textbooks give us. This research tool will not only benefit my 20 students in class, but the 58 in our grade; along with the students in future years. This research tool will be beneficial for my class for many, many years and thanks to you they are able to find those answers to their questions!
