My Students

Imagine obese teens in your city! My students' health is at risk. Give them a chance! Learning to use the Food Guide Pyramid and food preparation will help them prevent diseases and maintain health. They need knowledge and skills to stay healthy. We need a computer to create a recipe book for each one.

I teach inner city middle school students from single-parent homes who all qualify for free federal lunches.

They live in subsidized housing surrounded by corner stores full of junk foods they buy. My students take care of themselves after school and are responsible for their snack/meals when there is no adult available. Learning food preparation techniques will have a great impact on their lives and families. It is important that they know what and how much to eat to promote and maintain health. This knowledge and skill will guide them to choose nutritious foods over junk food. It is my goal to make them understanding that junk foods contribute to health problems that cause obesity and other preventable diseases. My students are good kids who are ready to learn but lack the skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Nutribites and Donorschoose have the potential to make a big impact in their food attitudes and practices, their lives and families who will share our recipe book.

My Project

Work and Family Life classes teach nutrition. Students study how the body uses nutrients to maintain health. I use the Food Guide Pyramid to make students learn the dietary allowances. I will buy a variety of foods to teach students simple food preparation methods which they can use at home to make meals. Recipes that don't require a lot of supervision will be used and organized to create a cook book. Students will use a word processor to organize the recipe book following the five food groups. The recipe book will be student-friendly to understand. Students will have fun eating what they make in class while learning important lessons that will change their home lives. Students will use the Internet to research diseases caused by lack of nutrients to make them understand the value of proper nutrition as an element of healthy living. They will recommend health tips. Students will gain new knowledge and skills that will last them a lifetime. The recipes will be used over again next year.

Nutribites recipe book has potential to impact the lives of my students and their families.

Understanding proper nutrition and cooking skills will help them eat healthier as they use our recipe book to prepare their meals. My students are at risk of being obese if they are not taught the value of good nutrition now. As a result of this project, they will avoid processed and junk foods that contribute to poor health and obesity. I believe I will see a change in their food attitudes and habits.
