Wii... Helping Children with Social and Emotional Needs!

My students need a Nintendo Wii game console and two remote controllers to assist in developing social skills.

My Students

For most of us it is easy to communicate with others, make friends, control our behavior, and move easily without a physical disability. For many of the students I service as a school social worker, these are great challenges in their lives.

My students are from grades PreK-8 that attend a small rural school in Illinois.

They are from low to moderate income families. They are students who are eager to learn and love to do well. They love to have fun and almost ALL of them enjoy video games, like the Nintendo Wii. Some of these children have had very difficult family lives or pasts. Others have disabilities such as autism, ADHD, or emotional problems. Others have difficulties with physical movement and lack confidence in their ability to participate in physical education or even walk properly. Our physical therapist would be able to use this to assist in her therapy with the students as well.

My Project

As a social worker, I am interested in assisting students with social skill deficits. I plan to use this as a tool to assist students in cooperative play and social interaction. My hope is that students will naturally form relationships with others through playing these games. They would also be required to invite someone to play and practice initiating conversations. For many students with autism or social anxiety, video games are a way to escape and avoid others but the Nintendo Wii is a much more social video game system than most. This game would also be a great incentive for students with emotional and behavior problems. We often find it difficult to identify incentives for students, especially at the middle school level. However, video game time for good behavior may be an excellent motivator. Additionally, this may be used as a coping skill for students who have difficulty controlling their anger. They would be able to play this game to calm themselves.

This will help numerous students who face social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. We would be thrilled to share pictures and stories of how this Wii is being utilized in our school. I know that our students would greatly benefit from this to learn social skills and to help control their behavior, while having fun at the same time! Thank you for considering helping our school!
