Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," Voltaire stated, and my students apply this every day in speech and debate. In debate, they must learn about all sides of an issue to be able to properly defend their stance.

We are a Title I school with over 40% of our student population coming from economically disadvantaged homes.

The debate program provides students the opportunity to earn not only admittance into college but also scholarship opportunities that may not have been possible otherwise. These are students with the drive and motivation unsurpassed by their peers and many of them will go on to become our future leaders in the government.

My Project

We are requesting technology products that will greatly benefit our students in their research and preparation for competition. The jump drives will be used as the students gather research to share with their teammates as well as for storage of necessary files and briefs to assist them in competitions. The laptop will be used in competitions as well by varsity debate team members but also by the entire speech squad. This will be vital when we travel to tournaments as it will avoid us having to take huge tubs of evidence, but rather have that replaced with small jump drives and a netbook, which is much more cost effective when having to check in luggage.

Students in debate have a unique opportunity to learn skills that will benefit them in all facets of life.

They learn critical thinking along with research skills that make them better prepared for college. However, the ability to see and understand all sides of an issue is what makes debate a truly rewarding and eye-opening experience and a worthwhile cause to support.
