My Students

Have you ever been asked to complete a project, but not had the materials required to finish it? Have you ever faced a deadline, but, because you had to share your tools, you were unable to get it done?

My business technology students are facing these problems right now.

They are asked to do a tremendous amount of work for our school, yet we do not have enough Mac computers to do this. My students come from a small rural school district in Iowa. Many will pursue college degrees in business, marketing, advertising or video production. For many of my students, this is the first exposure they will have to an operating system that is not Windows as well as specialized production programs to do this. My students have faced many hardships lately. Two of our community industries have relocated and many of our local business are downsizing. My students find themselves in the middle of an economic crisis that is affecting them daily. Having a computer that they can take home to work on these projects, many of which are seen throughout the community, would allow them to create so many more projects.

My Project

These Macbook computers will really make an impact in our classroom. Class size will not be limited if we have access to more computers. Many more students will be able to take the classes that use these computers. We will be able to make more photo collages, create marketing campaigns for local businesses and industry, create promotional materials for our local economic development agencies and maintain websites for the school as well as outside businesses. These students will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge from these computers that will give them a step up in college. Having used these Macbooks, they will be able to use new software without experiencing the learning curve that many new software users experience. Our community will benefit through the creation of the community promotional materials, film and DVD productions, as well as the video production we do for school and our local community cable channel.

The impact of this project is far reaching.

Students have a chance to claim a part in community betterment efforts as well as having the chance to become technologically literate and ready for college course work. With these resources, my students will help our community and have a stake in the economic development of our community. They will have the chance to produce and create meaningful and relevant materials, such as marketing campaigns, graphic design projects, and films.
