My Students

Do you remember the first time you curled up with a great fantasy novel and lost yourself in a world of fantastical creatures like fairies and elves? Fablehaven by Brandon Mull is a fantasy lover's dream come true. Help me open up the world of fantasy to my fifth grade readers.

I teach Language Arts and Social Studies to 48 fifth grade students in a public school in Florida.

My fifth grade students are a diverse group of readers. Many are reluctant readers who would never choose to pick up a book on their own, while others will read any book that is suggested to them. Some are strong readers while others struggle to make sense of the written word. They are hard workers and work well together. They encourage each other and help each other learn new skills and concepts. Many of my students give book talks and recommend books to their peers in class. They even share books from their own personal libraries with their classmates. Our class has adopted a kindergarten class and models reading to them. This really boosts the confidence of even my weaker readers. We regularly take time in class to talk about authors and new books we have discovered to keep reading fresh and alive in our classroom.

My Project

The novel, Fablehaven, by Brandon Mull is a fantasy novel that was recommended by Rick Riordan, the author of the Lightning Thief series. I read the Lightning Thief to my class and many of my students went on to read the entire series of books. I have approximately 30 students in my classes who want to read this book during our lunchtime and their playtime before school. They are giving up their social time with their peers in order to meet in my class and read this novel. Even some of my reluctant readers have volunteered to give up their own personal time to read Fablehaven. Students will explore the literary elements of fantasy novels and compare and contrast Fablehaven to other fantasies we have read this year. Students will work together to write a fantasy story of their own. The CD will allow even my weakest readers the opportunity to hear a fluent reader model reading using intonation and expression. The CD will help them extend their vocabulary and build comprehension.

Keeping reading alive in the classroom is a daunting task for teachers in this age of digital games and social networking.

My students are very excited about reading this book and are willing to give up their own personal time to do so. Please help me provide the opportunity for them to discover or rekindle the joy of reading. This novel is fast paced and sure to delight them. Fablehaven is the first in the series and I am hoping they will go on to read the entire Fablehaven series.
