My Students

I currently teach science at an small, inner-city high school in Missouri. The small class size allows for flexibility and the opportunity to do activities that would not be possible with more students. Unfortunately, we are unable to take advantage of this because we do not have enough resources.

I am lucky to teach highly motivated students who dream about attending college.

Not only do my students love hands-on experiments, group projects, and presentations but they learn best with these types of assignments. I would love to incorporate more of these activities but they take a great deal of resources. Our small budget does not have enough funds to purchase technology like laptops and software.

My Project

In order to create more meaningful assignments and projects I am trying to build a mini-computer lab for my science classroom. During lab experiments, students can use the laptops and software to record observations, prepare graphs and write lab reports. Both items will allow students get hands-on experience using technology in a laboratory setting. In the classroom, students will use the laptops and software during student presentations and projects. By combining project-based learning with technology, my students will gain experience working in a group to create an end-product to be presented to a class of their peers. By using this method of teaching and learning in high school, students will be better prepared for college where group projects and presentations are common. This technology will also be used during to access Internet resources. Streaming videos, research materials, and study guides will be available if we have computers in the classroom.

This technology and its myriad of uses will help my students have the same opportunities and resources as their suburban peers.

Due to the high cost of this technology, it cannot be purchased without your donation. Computers and software will increase scientific knowledge, motivation and achievement in all of my students. I can't wait to see the excitement on the faces of my students when they learn we have two new laptops for use in class!
