Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students need to take ownership over their learning. An effective method to accomplish this is to enable the student to own a book from which she or he can learn and love!

My students include 32 fabulous and unique fifth graders from Arizona.

While our class is a safe environment of learning, they face many obstacles and serious problems outside of the school, including unstable family lives, safety concerns, and financial troubles. All of which they cannot control as ten year olds. Inside of the classroom my students are bubbling with personality. They have creative and intuitive outlooks on life that surpass their years. These children never cease to amaze me by their resilience in the face of personal issues and their ingenuity in the classroom.

My Project

Throughout their academic years, my students have only read snippets of longer books from a textbook. They have never owned a novel that they can write in, learn from and love. Our class has already increased their reading skills by 12% in the first half of the year, based on a reading pretest and post-test. Now I want them to carry something with them to remind them of all their success. The book Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is the perfect memento you can provide. Each year that I have read this book, my students have mastered the difficult standard of analyzing plot with ease and vigor. Owning the book will only further their learning and excitement. They have never been able to write their thoughts in a novel: their visualizations, their connections, their epiphanies. Having this reminder of their learning will empower them to become the thoughtful and joyful readers that we aim to be.

Having a book to claim as your own is a powerful tool in the learning process.

My students love to bring their favorite books to school, most of which are picture books or Judy Blume books that they bought in kindergarten or first grade. Now they need a novel that reflects their current reading abilities. Number the Stars will be that book that they can keep as a prize and reminder of their fifth grade accomplishments.
