My Students

“Listening is the only way to entertain some folks.” Kin Hubbard Do you hear what I hear? A classroom is a busy place with many things going on at once. To be able to put on a pair of headphones, tune out the din, and listen to a book sounds wonderful.

I teach fourth grade in an urban school district in southwestern Virginia.

Our class sizes are growing as are the individual needs of many of our students. My students' reading levels are spread across the spectrum. Our students come from near and far and each enriches the rest.

My Project

A listening center would allow a group of students to work independently on an assignment. Reading and textbook materials are available on tape and CDs. There are many wonderful books that have been recorded on tape that can be enjoyed. Do you remember when someone read a book aloud to you? What a pleasure. The listening center also offers the opportunity to record our voices. We can record books for younger students to listen to and share the joy while building skills.

The headphone equipped center allows groups to work nearby without being distracted.

Having a listening center will allow me to work with others while the students at the center are actively engaged. The center's headphones provide a quiet listening zone. It's four-speaker base also provides for great whole group activities. Are you listening? We want to.
