My Students

I have some really inquisitive kids that never know what to do at recess. They tend to get into mischief. I would like to get them to work together on a hands-on activity. They'd be learning Math and Science without even knowing it. This would just be just the start of many extension exercises.

I’d really like to give my students a “hands-on” chance to build something they may not experience otherwise.

My students attend a K-6 public elementary school in Ohio. There are a total of 7 elementary schools in our district. The district is probably considered middle class, but the students that attend my school are lower-middle class. 16 of the 24 students in my homeroom come from single parent households, and I have children from a wide variety of ethnicity's; Hispanic, African-American and White. All of the kids are great. They behave in class, but several of them cut loose when outside. That’s why I’m looking for an activity that allows them to make something inside and then use it outside with my supervision.

My Project

Model rocketry requires planning, building (sanding, cutting and painting), and launching model rockets, which is science in real live action. Students learn theory and then experience the actual application. Through studying rocket theory, forming hypotheses, and testing them through launch experiments, students can practice the scientific method. They can test different body styles or launch angles, measuring vertical and horizontal distance traveled. My students will learn how to design and carry out scientific investigations and even how to properly document the process through lab notes and reports. I really believe that model rocketry will aid students’ broader educational development. Students with an enthusiasm for rocketry will drive into rocket-related books in their reading class, and even reluctant writers have a chance to shine when writing about their experiences. It can build a lifelong interest in science and maybe an interest in engineering!

This program would increase cooperative learning by allowing students to work together in teams.

Create community connections by inviting family members to participate in launch day! I will have students give a brief presentation of what they’ve learned leading up to launch day. Then the launching the model rocket and watching them soar high into the sky. That would be the culmination of learning. AND I can reuse much of the initial supplies so the next time doing this activity is less costly.
