My Students

Imagine working on a collage and having to wait for the student next to you to be finished cutting so that you could take your turn with the scissors. This is the challenge that my students face each time we work on creating collage works of art.

My students range from kindergarten to 8th grade.

They come from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. This school is a place of acceptance for all people in all colors in all sizes. Sometimes they even surprise us adults in the building at how accepting they are. They learn from each other, feed off each other and grow because of each other.

My Project

When the artist, Henri Matisse, was an old man and could no longer stand at his easel to paint, he taught himself how to "Draw with Scissors". Using scissors develops strength physically and visually. Cutting is a fine motor skill, and my students are starting to lack this skill due to lack of practice. Being able to use a scissor, with cutting along a line, teaches us how to see in a different way. It all teaches us how to focus on what we are working on.

By funding a full class set of scissors for our art studio you are giving my students the ability to create beautiful, cut paper works of art for years to come.

What could be more important than giving a child a way to express him or her self?
