My Students

Imagine enjoying looking at books but not having the fine motor skills to turn the pages without tearing them.

My classroom is an Exceptional Children's classroom for students with extensive needs in North Carolina.

My students are in a self-contained classroom for grades K-3. They enjoy having books read to them since they are not able to read. We read books to them and ask them comprehension questions. We have lots of books in our room, but the students have trouble turning the pages due to motor problems. Sometimes the pages get torn in the process. Some children also have behaviors that will damage books as well.

My Project

I am requesting page protectors, 3 ring binders, and card stock paper. By taking our books apart, putting the pages in page protectors, and then in binders, my students are able to access the books on their own. This may be a small change, but it really makes students feel great. It gives them a sense of independence since they do not have to rely on the teachers to help them turn pages. We can use these books for our Story Time, ask comprehension questions (that are created on the card stock paper), do art activities that center around the book, and integrate these books into other curriculum areas like Math and Science. We have done this with other books and the students are able to learn new concepts by connecting what was in the book to their experience in the classroom. What a way to learn!

My students try hard to learn and want to achieve.

Using books helps them achieve by making learning fun. Also, by making the books sturdier in the binders, the students are able to handle them on their own - reading and looking at books is a wonderful leisure skill for anyone to have.
