My Students

I can't imagine the endless summer days without a book or two. Some of my students can't afford books, so I've developed a summer reading program that will give them the books they need.

I teach at a rural high school in northern Maine.

The majority of my students are the children of mill workers. A lot of them have never been in a bookstore. In conjunction with the 8th grade ELA teacher, I've come up with a program that will help students without funds for books as well as help students transition into high school. Their 8th grade book was To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I need copies of Secret Life of Bees to give to students to read over the summer months so when they come to school that first day they will know what is expected of them and hopefully that will take a little of the pressure off of them. Also, our aim in 9th grade is to ease them into college level work that will be expected of them throughout high school and into college. And if we can get them reading in the summer that is a step in the right direction.

My Project

Our aim is to get each student working at college level even if they decide not to attend college. Reading levels drop so dramatically in the summer that I want to provide good reading material to my students even when they are not in class. The first few days of school will be centered around their books, their reading and interpretations. I hope it will be a rich conversation in order to start the year off with a bang!

This project is so important because it is going to give students the power to make their own decisions and the freedom to follow through with their dreams.

Each student may not decide to further their education in college but they will at least have the choice.
