I am a chemistry instructor working in a high-need, Title One school in a very rural area of SC. I work in a school that is a mosaic of nationalities, ethnicities, and family backgrounds. With so much diversity I find myself doing all I can to accommodate learners of all types and ensure success in my classroom. The only problem with that is when neither my students nor I can provide the supplies they need to achieve.

The eleventh and twelfth graders I come into contact with are brilliant, budding young leaders of not just our area, but potentially our nation and world. It is heartbreaking to see them come in without materials but with bountiful potential. I try the best I can with my own limited funds to supply my kids with everything they need to succeed, but pricier items are harder to acquire. In a community where money is scarce, and where parents are facing grave times and situations, it's hard to come up with the extra cash for supplies at school. For some students, breakfast/lunch/dinner is a luxury item. I have so many students that come to me each day and feel ashamed for not having the materials they need for class. It's not their fault that mom and dad cannot provide those items due to financial instability. My dilemma is how to provide for these students so that they all have an equal chance to succeed, to learn, to become something bigger and better than what they are currently.

My students are in need of several graphing calculators in order to aid them in succeeding in chemistry class. It is a subject that, if taught well, could inspire our children to be the future in new age cures, medications, and many other products. The calculators will allow them to master the sometimes complex math in chemistry and achieve a grade that is representative of their ability, instead of their economical status and prowess. This will also teach the students much needed skills on the calculator so that when they move onto college they will be prepared. After all, this is college prep level course; that is my job.

Your help in this effort could be all that is needed to really bring about change for our students. Knowing that others are there, willing to pitch in and invest in these kids lives and futures will impact them for the remainder of their lives. You never know, your donation may lead to one of them majoring in chemistry in college and one day finding the cure for cancer.
