My Students

"Teacher! I can't see!" This is the chant my students serenade me with everyday. I do everything I can to try to keep my students engaged and on task. However, when they are cramping their necks to see displays and walking up to the board to see directions, engagement can be difficult.

I teach ELL students in a high poverty school in Illinois.

My students are learning English as their second language and detailed visuals and clear directions are a must for comprehension. I want my students to be successful and I want to optimize their learning as much as possible, but some things are just out of my hands. My students are not part of the mainstream at our school and obtaining resources can be difficult. Research has shown that detailed visuals, clear vocabulary and defined objectives are key to the success of ELL students. Though I try to provide them with all of these things, it is often difficult for all of them to see at once, due to the limited space on the whiteboard. My students are eager to learn and I want to provide them with the resources necessary to help them achieve their goals.

My Project

Having a projector in my classroom will allow students to take advantage of all the visual resources we have, such as videos, audio-visual presentations, graphic organizers, music, etc. By projecting these resources from my computer, all students will be able to see and internalize the material presented at once. I expect the distraction of students getting out of their desks to be able to see will decrease dramatically. By minimizing all these distractions and engaging students for longer periods of time, learning is sure to take off in our classroom!

This is a resource I know we would use on a daily basis.
