Who has changed the life of Americans the most throughout time? I teach 2nd graders in a fast-growing suburban community. As I inspire my students to learn about famous Americans by integrating a study of biographies and social studies, I hope to encourage them to make a difference in the world just as these people did in their times.

Students always show a strong curiosity for learning about these famous Americans and their contributions to our country. However, it is a challenge to locate biographies that are on a 2nd grade reading level. Often, the few that can be found in libraries are the ones that students have heard over and over again.

My goal is to build a biographical library in our own classroom so that my students have books on their levels to choose from during our study. By purchasing 50 biographical books geared towards children aged 7-9, I will be expanding the choices available to my students so they can find someone new who interests them to research and learn about. These non-fiction books will provide my students with an opportunity to read, research, explore timelines, and important contributions/events from history. They will use this information to write reports and poems, create timelines, draw portraits, and design trading cards and comic strips to showcase what they have learned about their famous person. As a culminating activity, we will hold a Living Museum in which students will dress up as the famous person and stand as statues. As visitors tour our museum, the statues will come to life to share about their important contributions.

These hands-on, interactive activities will excite young children about history and the contributions of famous Americans throughout time. However, these activities cannot be completed without the books requested to gain this information. By funding this project, you will make it possible for my current class and future classes to discover who has changed the lives of Americans throughout time...and by doing so, you will be changing the lives of my students at the same time!
