My Students

It's funny that even though Vietnam happened in my lifetime, I don't remember much more than my mother crying when her cousin Bobby died. Vietnam-such a defining time in America- WWII is the "good" war while the Persian Gulf/Iraq are seen by others as "bad". Vietnam is that pivotal bridge of change. Critical thinking skills are essential in college.

I teach in an inner city classroom.

Most, if not all of my students have no frame of reference for Vietnam other than they have heard it terms of Iraq. I have students who want to learn and understand, but lack exposure to relevant materials to understand what is happening today and how the war thousands of miles away and 40 years ago in "Nam" still has such a profound effect on the American political scene and the American collective memory of the sixties and seventies. I don't have a high school library in my school, I don't have the resources I need to help the students really dig into all of the perspectives of this war and come to their conclusions about this war and this time period. Good history teachers let the student decide how and what should be remembered about critical and controversial times in history, they don't need to be told what to think, but instead provide them with materials so they can deliberate, reflect and decide what they think and believe and these are the skills needed in collge to be successful.

My Project

You will help my students look at Vietnam from so many angles, they will be able to glimpse the turmoil and patriotism, the earnestness, the fervor and the misunderstandings of the time. These materials will be used to teach students "center" style- meaning students move from station to station to read, share, make maps, look at letters, listen to protest and patriotic songs and read so they can slowly form a picture of what was happening in this time. I model my history class with inquiry based learning so that students can investigate history with a greater depth of knowledge. Being able to analyze and interpret primary sources will help students prepare for college.

Your support of this project will help my students begin the process of critical thinking and higher level learning so that they can be prepared for the college classroom.

Using primary sources and first hand accounts help bring history alive for students and prepare them for the learning styles found in the college classroom. Worksheets don't prepare students for college the way these materials will. No more spoon feeding of ideas like was done in elementary school, today's student has to examine and challenge what we know and think about history. Vietnam is too important just to be two sections of a history textbook, these materials will help student have vivid details of a complex and painful part of American History. Thank you for reading my proposal.
