My Students

Today's technology is advancing faster than public schools can keep up! I am looking for an innovative way to get my students to read for pleasure on a daily basis. Hopefully, I can increase their literacy skills by using up to date technology to get them into reading.

I teach special education at a high need school in a resort town.

My students are juniors and seniors who are completing their high school education and preparing to enter either a two or four year college after high school. I am always trying to get the students to read for pleasure and our school has a program called "ER", for Everybody Reads, that builds time into the school day for them to read for pleasure. I hope that by combining technology with reading, I can persuade more of them to read for pleasure.

My Project

I am requesting a Sony digital reader to enhance my students reading time during the school day. My students always want to work on laptops, so I am hoping that by using an e-reader, they will be excited about reading. We do not have any of these at our school and I think the students will really like them. Also, since there is an audio option, I can use it to supplement novels they are reading in their English classes.

If I can interest my students in reading for pleasure, hopefully, this will improve their literacy skills and help prepare them for college.

I also hope to create lifelong learners who learn to enjoy sitting down with a good book!
