I help 135 seventh graders explore and develop a love for literature. We are smack dab in the middle of the United States so books often need to provide a diverse cultural experience that our environment cannot.

Which would you rather: read a textbook about Mexico or read about a girl who gets stuck there? Color Guatemala on a map, or read about a boy and his little sister escaping their civil war by boat? Write a report on Dominican Republic, or read about a boy with a crazy tia who paints their house in Vermont purple?

The books you donate will align students' English and Social Studies curriculum further deepening their knowledge and cultural diversity. Seventh graders in my school district learn about Latin America. What better way to do this than with authors' stories and memoirs?

My students have little experience with other cultures due to the location of their community. Unfortunately, their lack of cultural knowledge can often be misunderstood as prejudice or intolerance. I want to bring Latin cultures alive for my students through rich stories written by Latino authors. These stories will provide insight and understanding about other people's lives and teach the commonalities we share as a human race.
