My Students

If you give a child a book, he will want to see the pictures inside the book. When you show him the pictures, he will probably ask you to read him the story.After you read the story, he will probably ask for a new book. And the chances are after he reads the new book, he will ask for another book.

I teach Kindergarten in a Title 1 school.

Most of my students receive free breakfast and lunch and are considered economically disadvantaged. I have 20 students in my classroom and 30% of my students are learning English as a second language.Our Reading curriculum requires daily reading centers. These are workstations where the kids are completing independent literacy activities while the teacher is giving a small group differentiated instruction. My students’ favorite center is the Listening Center. The Kindergrtners love to seat around the CD/tape player with the storybook in their hands and follow the reader by pointing to the words with their little fingers. This center not only helps the students in becoming better readers, but it also helps the ESOL students in enriching their vocabulary.

My Project

Unfortunately after many years of usage the CD player, the headphones and many of the books in my classroom fell apart. I had to remove this center from my daily Literacy activities. The students are not happy without their little listening corner and I understand why. For some of these kids school is one of the only times these students can hold a book and listen to a story.

This project will greatly benefit my students by helping them in taking their first steps in the long path of becoming fluent readers.

I will be able to serve my students for years to come with these resources.
