I am a second grade teacher in a high crime and high poverty neighborhood in Illinois and my students LOVE learning. They love learning and I love teaching, but the problem is we are lacking some materials that I feel will really push my students to the next level. Our number one priority this year is reading fluency. I cannot let my students leave my classroom not being fluent readers. I have twenty-seven students ranging from reading fluency levels of 11 wpm to 170 wpm. I have book clubs with exciting series such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Junie B. Jones, and Magic Tree House that focus on comprehension with my kids that are at or above second grade level. The problem is my kids that are at first grade level can’t read the books they so desperately want to read. Their feeling of discouragement is understandable. They can give up now and accept failure like many other students before them, or they can strive for success. Please help them choose success. They are at the age where they still desire to read and I don’t want to lose them while the fire is still lit. To foster their love for reading, I’d like to purchase a fluency station along with fluency passages, readers theater scripts, books on tape, and sight word materials so that my kids can increase their fluency skills. My hope is that they can join their peers in book club by the end of the year. With these materials, they can easily track their fluency growth. They will be using these materials during our readers’ workshop time in the morning and during mixed centers in the afternoon. Please help me give my kids the tools they need to make the right choice.
