Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is my third year teaching, and my second year teaching a 5th grade special education class. I currently have 10 students who all learn through many different styles of teaching. My students are very hardworking, but are struggling readers and writers. Our school is in a very low income area. Most parents are working hard just to make ends meet.

Getting my students motivated for reading, listening, and comprehension activities can be a challenge. They have shown interest in listening to books on tape or CD. While I am working with a reading group to address the specific needs of each child, I need my other students to be engaged in a fun & independent reading activity.

With the CD player and junction box, they can listen to stories and hear good models of fluent reading. With the headphones, they can listen at their own volume and not distract other students in the classroom. If we had a CD player and headphones for a listening center, I could have students working at the center, while I'm assisting my reading group.

With your help, my students will be able to enjoy listening to books on CD, while at the same time, enhancing their reading and listening skills. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
