Our students are challenged daily in math class here at our school. As teachers we push and push our students to perform the CA state standards with proficiency. Yet, the daily life skills involving math are forgotten. These students need real life situations put in front of them in order to be a well rounded part of society as they grow older.

I am planning on a "real world" unit for the entire school. Writing checks, balancing check books, filing taxes, paying rent, buying groceries, etc... These students need to be challenged in things they will find useful in life as they grow. Most of my students can factor a quadratic equation, but they are unable to fill out a check correctly, use an ATM or balance a check book. YIKES!

I need 40 calculators to share among the math teachers here at our school site. I have developed a plan for the students to complete a "Real World" unit and acquire the skills needed to function on their own. Having the calculators is a support when we are talking about simple and compound interest, balancing a check book etc... The students most likely will use a calculator to accomplish these tasks at home, but we have never instructed them on how to use a scientific calculator properly.

We need your help in purchasing these calculators and opening the students eyes to real life. Help us support and educate our students to function on their own. Lets educate them and help them stay away from credit card debt, help them understand interest rates, credit reports etc... Please, we need your support!
