Hi! I am a Title 1 Reading teacher in a small town school district. I also teach in the areas Extended School Year Program that brings together students with autism, downs syndrome, mental retardation, and multiple handicaps for summer school to maintain and increase social, speech, gross motor, fine motor, and academic skills over the summer break. This program serves over 100 elementary age students.

There are over 14 elementary classrooms in this program. The class size ranges from 4 to 10 students. No child is turned away from this summer program but with each additional child added materials are not increased. Each classroom is given a small box of supplies with several posters, 2 or 3 very sharp and pointed scissors, a box of crayons and/or markers, a pack of construction paper, and a notepad. The pointed scissors are definitely not appropriate for these students, but that is all that was available. The scissors were never used in my classroom and probably not in many others either. I dug up old silver ones that barely worked, bit they had a blunt tip. I and the over 30 teachers in this program scrounged what we could from our own supplies to bring into our classrooms for the summer. The students deserve much more than that....

Please make our summer program fun and safe for our students. The requested art materials would be used for academic learning and fun time. The materials I choose such as the roll on paint, squeeze tempera paints, and dot paints are adaptable for many our students' special needs-- as well as perfect for work on fine motor skills, social skills (sharing, taking turns, and asking for materials) and vocabulary skills (colors, making request and more..) The blunt scissors would be save for all of our students to use with supervision. The dot glue would mean less waste then the normal glue bottles. The number and alphabet rubbing plates will allow students to explore basic academic skills with a different medium. The 4 themed art kits would be shared among several classes an allow the students to create art projects around the programs weekly themes for All about Me, Insects, Farm Animals, and Ocean Life. These supplies his summer would allow our students to engage in creative academic activities as well as experience the joy of ART!

Above all else you would make it possible to bring a variety of art activities to students with a wide variety of special needs for a summer of learning and art fun! The autistic children I worked with and all of the other students in the elementary program would love to get their hands on these material. Please help make it happen!
