Grades 6-8

I teach 7th grade students about Asia, Africa, and the Middles East. My students come to me with a very limited knowledge base about these regions. Many of them have not been exposed to cultures other than what they experience on a daily basis. Most students have never even left their home town. I always try to help my students understand that there is so much more to the world than what they see while watching television or what they read in our textbook, but it is really hard to do without the materials.

I currently teach 100 students and have two copies of this novel. Many of my students will bring a few school supplies at the beginning of the year - their parent(s) often cannot replace the supplies as they are used up. It would just not be possible to burden many of "my families" with additional expenses; asking them to provide a novel would be out of the question.

"Ties that Bind, Ties that Break" is a book that begins to explain some of the cultural differences between China and the United States. We are introduced to FOUR year old Ailin at the beginning of the book. She is engaged to be married to a seven year old but the engagement is broken off because she (and members of her family) refuse to bind her feet. The book also introduces some of the limitations that Ailin experienced as a girl and the way that she became a social outcast just because her feet were not bound. Reading "Ties that Bind, Ties that Break" will help my students begin to understand that the people of China are much more than statistics on a textbook page, much more than what they experience on a daily basis.

My students need vivid, real world examples of Asia. We need a class set of "Ties that Bind, Ties that Break." Your help will ensure that all of my students will have access to this valuable resource. Please consider making a donation today.
