I teach middle school world history in a low-income school with a primarily African American and Latino population. Our charter school abounds with curious and hard-working kids--who are at school from 7:15 until 5 everyday, with an additional two hours of homework each night. What we need more of is class-sets of high-interest books.

The study of history is often abstract to students in middle school, who often struggle with seeing beyond their own experience. Concepts that are related to other cultures and time periods--which, when examined critically will offer students rich practice in developing new methods of reasoning--are often seen as unimportant out-of-hand. Such content usually requires a hook for students to involve them more personally in the information. The study of Japan, with its samurai and daimyo, could be extraordinarily fascinating, and a great starting point for thinking and writing about history. The Japanese social system--with its similarities with other nations with which it hand no contact, offers a great opportunity for talking about the nature of society and its structure.

In order to make the study of medieval Japan more interesting, as well as to reinforce important reading strategies, I am excited to work with the grade's ELA teacher to read "Samurai's Tale" by Erik Christian Haagaard. The book will allow me to reinforce historical thinking about a culture that many of the students--who rarely if ever leave the confines of their neighborhood--have a problem relating to. In addition, the book is incredibly action-packed, and is a high-interest book which boys--the hardest kids to get to crack open a book--find the most engaging.

Your generous gift will ensure that world history will be a little more accessible my students, and will open their thinking and imaginations in a way that only history can. The book will allow the experience of learning about Japan, stick with my students for years to come.
