Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a Hispanic, low-income, and 100% free or reduced lunch school in an urban setting. I teach middle school, currently 8th grade Physics.

Today's a lecture day; students know the routine already. They take out their science notebooks, begin to create a Cornell notetaker and enthusiastically await their teachers interesting and inspiring presentations. Inspiring because I can hear the murmurs of two girls whispering "I want to do that for my presentation with Mujeres Latinas group, that I attend with my mom". And other times that students have the option of presenting their learning in a manner they choose and many times they pick a PowerPoint presentation, like their teacher. Until, one day, I have to tell them, "Kids, you are going to have to listen very closely to what I'm about to present and use your text books as a guide if I talk to fast, because the schools overhead has just broke!" I hear a long sigh of Ahhhhhhhhs. I soon begin to feel very frustrated and soon feelings of dis-servicing my kids start to overwhelm me.

My students need an overhead projector. They find that being able to take notes using the presentations that I make for them offer them another way to learn the material, especially for those that are visual as well as auditory learners. This is especially helpful for a kinesthetic learner since they have to do a multiple things while they take and organize their notes in their science notebooks. So essentially this technology serves ALL learners.

Your help will ensure that my students gain the knowledge they need in a very active way. Students not only will hear the information but will be able to see pictures, the key concepts organized, and take advantage of a variety of websites, such as Brainpop, that our students can see as a whole group while note-taking.
