In our low-income kindergarten classroom in New York we use reading to learn across the curriculum: everything from science to social studies to building character. We've extended reading aloud as a group by making masks of our favorite characters when comparing different cultures’ versions of "The Three Bears" and we were even inspired by Carol McCloud's book "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?" to start a classroom "Goodness Bucket" that fills up with marbles every time someone is "caught" being a good friend. Do you want to help fuel this passion for literature and help instill a lifelong love of reading in children? Well, it's one of the reasons that I went into teaching! As a first year teacher I am amazed at how excited my students are when we learn about new authors or when I have new books to add to our library. You could be a part of that excitement! I teach 26 bright and beautiful kindergarteners in a high-needs neighborhood. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch and are so eager to learn every day. Unfortunately, my classroom library does not meet the needs of my very excited bookworms. I can often be found at the public library multiple nights a week, checking out extra books for my students. A leveled reading library is especially important in kindergarten because this is the age when children learn to read. With this donation, my students will be ensured best practices for reading instruction and will be well on their way to reading success! You will not only be helping my students this year, but for all the years and readers to come. With your generous donation, our reading buckets will be filled with leveled readers that not only will engage my students but will also be at their appropriate reading level, which is crucial for reading success. This collection of books will become a treasured part of our classroom library. Thank you so much for your support! It is greatly appreciated!
