We’re tilling our heels to provide an outdoor classroom to our students. I'm a third grade language teacher who is hoping to provide her students with an outdoor classroom space so that they are able to experience hands-on gardening projects.

I work in a "green" building which is made of recycled materials where we offer a holistic education program. The school was built to make use of natural lighting for day lit classroom and the materials used both inside and outside of the building were carefully selected to ensure the healthiest environment for our students. To further our efforts of educating the whole child, we have incorporated within the last year a wellness policy. We want to educate our students on what healthy choices look and feel like. In this endeavor we would like to incorporate courtyard gardens where our students can plant, grow, and harvest their own foods, and thereby allowing them to make use of these food choices into our schools daily breakfasts and lunches. Our cafe serves only the healthiest foods, prepared fresh daily, with minimal outside food processing. As wonderful as this all is, there is a shortfall of funds to support our efforts. There is no short supply of willing participants to help make this project a reality, but with many of our families in need, it makes it difficult for funding to be found.

I'm therefore placing my request for help in your hands. I'm working alongside other teachers within my hallway to bring this project to a reality. The picnic table seating will provide an outdoor classroom space for our students to work on gardening development, complete writing assignments, research projects, and journaling as they work within their gardens.

The mission of our school is to help each child reach full potential in all areas of life. Our missing component is our garden courtyards. Our students will grow in awareness of what it takes to bring food to the table and also grow in respect for farmers and the health of their earth. Adding this project to the school will provide students with an environment they can be excited about. Students look forward to coming to school when they have opportunities for outdoor science education. The gardens will make the school a more wholesome place to be and create an engaging atmosphere. Allowing children to work hands on in the gardens is an innovative way to enliven science and nutrition education. This program would also mean a lot as it would provide an opportunity to foster community involvement as many families are struggling during these difficult economic times.
