Students are encouraged to write effective compositions, but they all face the challenge of providing adequate details and elaboration. The purpose of this project is to colorfully show students the power of supporting their ideas by having them highlight in color the important components of their papers as part of the editing process. Students will use colored highlighters to identify their thesis sentence, topic sentences and support for their ideas. Each of these elements will be coded with a different-colored highlighter. Once students have self-edited with this process, we will examine these elements and determine where to revise and improve the content of their papers. The magic of colored highlighters will speak more fluently than a teacher's red pen. I teach 115 students in academic and Advanced Placement English in an urban high school. Students would need three different colored highlighters to complete this task. The highlighters would be kept in the room and re-used on each writing assignment in all classes. I would like students to have this kinesthetic/spatial experience of working with text because I think it would help many of them see how they can improve the details of their writing. It also would add some fun and color to the editing process.
