My students need a set of nonfiction books that include environmental topics, 4 sets of Energy for the Future Books, and a set of Earth Beneath Our Feet Nonfiction books.

We are a small neighborhood Charter School. We only have two classes per grade level for a total of 196 students. We pride ourselves on focusing on the individual student and offering exciting learning opportunities! We try to give students as much exposure to the sciences as possible. Science is our future! We are trying to make students aware of their impact on the environment and how they can help by showing them alternatives to what they know.

Our school has been trying to teach students the value of going green. The students have gotten so excited to participate and have come up with many ideas of how we can help as a school. A good portion of our efforts has gone toward recycling items from lunch, including plastic bottles, drink pouches and chip bags. We are sending them to a company that is creating items out of the recycled materials. The students were excited to see the results of their efforts and it encouraged them to continue on. We are limited in the amount of time we get to spend on teaching Science, therefore, I try to incorporate as much reading about science into my reading groups.

The leveled books focus on the environment and the earth. They will be a wonderful resource to pair with all of the hands-on learning the students are doing. The set of books that focus on alternative resources will be very helpful in providing information for students to research the benefits of alternative energy.

Having a set of non-fiction books will give students information about the environment and their impact. In addition, we will be able to utilize these resources during our reading group time in order to use our time wisely. We are so rushed trying to get all subjects in every day that integrating environmental education into our reading program is a perfect fit.
