I teach 8th grade language arts and am department chairperson for a rural community in North Carolina with a moderately large ESL population.

Our school is working hard to improve literacy. In order for students to connect with literature it must represent and reflect elements of their own lives and cultures. Our Hispanic and latino students have much more difficulty finding literature that reflects their culture within our class sets of novels and materials used for literature circles. As a grade level, the language arts teachers would like to have access to materials that will engage and validate our students. These are hard-working and courageous young men and women who would benefit from challenging and relevant materials.

The materials requested are written by authors who have lived lives that reflect those of our young students. These writers demonstrate to our students that their culture and experiences are valuable and enriching to the people and world around them. These stories and writers also show that it is possible for the seemingly "impossible" to be true.

Your help will ensure that my students receive relevant reading material that reflects a positive and enriching view of their lives and cultures.
