"The reading center is boring, Miss S..." I teach half day kindergarten to two classes of energetic five and six year olds who are in the early stages of becoming readers. I am new to the grade level and my section was added on this year so I am constantly re-evaluating my classroom needs to make it a more user-friendly environment.

This is a phrase no teacher wants to hear so I reflected on why they might be saying this. As I observed students in the reading center I noticed there is no shortage of books that they can read the words, read the pictures or retell the story if they have already had it read to them. They are organized into bins and students are well-trained on how to choose just right books.

So what is missing? I realized that there needs to be a carpet with some comfortable reading pillows to make it more inviting instead of the cold, hard floor.

If the students have a reading center that is inviting, it will make the environment a place that students will enjoy even more!
