Ms. Joseph Crossland High School
Temple Hills, MD Grades 6-8

I began this year teaching 5th grade Social Studies and Science, but because my background is in English and the 7th grade students were struggling I was moved last month to English. I teach at a Charter School that truly believes that students come first. I taught these students last year, so I know they can be bright and motivated students. They just need consistency and engaging lessons, activities and books. These students are from the surrounding neighborhood which is in the inner city.

Despite the obstacles that many of my students have at home and recently this year at school, I know these students are mentally prepared to learn and to be challenged. When they learned that I would be teaching them the remainder of the school year, they were extremely excited. They remembered my theme that the impossible is possible. So when my students walk into our classroom, they know that they can leave the burdens of their home and social life at the door. If they are hungry, I will feed them. If they don't have clothes, I will dress them. If they don't have supplies, I will supply them. I want my childrens #1 concern to be education.

The school and myself provide so much to these students, but sometimes it's not enough and that is where you come in. I am looking to increase my students reading comprehension skills with a variety of reading strategies and activities. The textbooks that are currently in class just aren't enough. I would like to enhance my Literacy Centers with Nonfiction and Fiction Articles, Test Taking Strategies and Activities that will increasing their reading comprehension. These books are needed to supplement the knowledge that they are receiving, increase their reading comprehension skills and motivate them to continue reading.

Your donations will make it possible for my students to increase their reading skills with interesting activities and reading strategies while learning life lessons. It is imperative that children learn to become readers, understand what they are reading and communicate what they've learned.
