By the age of 65, one in three Americans will suffer from hearing loss enough to interfere with communication. For marching percussionists, this danger is all the greater. The marching drum line at my school has found great success over the past four years. They have earned either first or second place in the state every year, and continue to pass expectations set out for them. The young men and women in this line have been working steadily toward the goal of excellence, including many hours of practice time both individually and as a group.

If anyone has ever been a part of or near a marching drum line before, they know that it is not a quiet ordeal. Students will often leave a drum line practice complaining of their ears hurting or ringing. Ear plugs help the situation, but too many students forget them from one day to the next.

Thankfully, Vic Firth has put out a new series of products that can greatly help the problem of hearing damage while still giving students the ability to practice. The Heavy Hitter practice pads are available for all marching instruments and replace the loud drums with rubber practice pads that are virtually silent while still very practical for practice purposes. With these practice pads, students will be able to continue the rehearsals that have brought them so much success without the future dangers of hearing loss.

Your help will ensure that these young men and women can continue to find success as a group while maintaining their hearing health. There is no greater cause than the future of our children, and that is the heart of this project. The addition of these items will help these children take care of such a vital part of their future lives, even if they do not fully understand or appreciate it yet. This is not just helping them in the present, it is helping to insure their future.
