Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Kindergarten teacher in New Mexico. The current drop out rate in our district is around 50%. I am always looking for funding opportunities that engage and stimulate learning to foster a love of school and establish a strong social and academic base for student success. As academic standards continue to rise, I can see over the course of five years that I have taught Kindergarten how it has evolved into "First Grade". My students leave Kindergarten reading and writing, as well as understanding "above grade level" concepts in Science. I often worry that the lack of creative play opportunities that assist in social development may have negative ramifications later on and I would like to have imaginative play activities available for my students to use during thier daily schedule.

The last 20 minutes of our school day, I meet with students individually to reflect on their daily successes and goals for the next day (if needed). During this time the other students get to choose a "center" to play at. My marble run pieces have been lost or crushed over the last several years, my dollhouse was "borrowed" from another teacher and shows signs of being "very well loved", my train set was a used gift from my educational assistant. When observing my students, they truly LOVE playing with anything in which they can be creative and use their imagination. I would to update our "toys" as a special treat to my hard working kiddos!

I would like to purchase a new dollhouse, marble run set, magnetic tile building kit, community play rug, and train set to replace our "well-loved" ones. This will benefit the 20 students in my class this year and because they are sturdy and non-consumable the Kindergarten students at our school will be able to utilize them for years to come. My hope to ensure that my 5 and 6 year old students have opportunities to participate in dramatic/imaginative play to stimulate their creative minds and social development to balance their rigorous academic expectations.

I would truly appreciate your support of my project, Imagination Station, because you will make it possible for my early childhood students to engage in imaginative and creative play during school time to balance the demands of our rigorous academic expectations. I want to establish a LOVE of school so I can do my part in lowering our district drop out rate. :)
