Book Buddies

My students need 5 copies each of 20 lively and entertaining books that they can read with a volunteer from the community.

This project expired on April 17, 2010.

My school is located in a rural part of North Carolina. We serve children in grades K - 5 and we teach all subjects. Over half of the students we serve receive free or reduced lunch.

Many of the students we work with come from difficult home situations and are struggling with their reading and other subjects. They are not being read to or with and they do not have access to books at home due to financial issues in the family.

We need books to support a literacy program we have initiated this year called "Book Buddies". The premise behind this program is that we send a powerful message to children and families when volunteers from the community come in and read with our students twice a month. After reading the books the students are allowed to take the books home to build their own personal library.

Your support of this project will make it possible to put books in the hands of students and open the door of opportunity for them to have a positive literacy experience with a positive, caring volunteer from the community. These are the children who do not have regular access to books at home, who are not able to order books from book clubs or books fairs and who need a program like this to help to improve their literacy and hopefully promote a love for reading in the process.
