Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach preschool in a high poverty elementary school. A lot of my children have significant language delays because of severe autism, learning disabilities, learning a second language, or unstable impoverished home lives.

Language development is the main focus in my classroom. It’s my responsibility to teach them those essential skills to be prepared for kindergarten and beyond. I select my teaching units based on the students’ needs and interests. Preschool children love to learn about farm animals. Since brain research shows that learning happens best when it is hands-on and of high-interest, I try to incorporate activities in which the children are active participants. Having an incubator to observe the life cycle of chickens would bring excitement to our classroom. Plus, it is easier to bring in baby chicken eggs than baby horses!

We need an incubator to observe the life cycle of the chickens. We have a local farmer that will donate the eggs. We just need a place to put them. Watching the baby chicks hatch will stimulate lots of good vocabulary and conversations among the preschool children. As the children are able to see, hear, and feel the new chicks, they will not only increase their receptive and expressive vocabulary, but will also learn some important science skills. We will have rich class discussions, make class books, and use journals to record the process. The children will represent their learning through art and drama projects.

With the help of your donation, my students will be highly motivated to use language to share their observations and experiences about watching the baby chicks hatch. Since oral language is a prerequisite to reading and writing, increasing language skills is essential for these preschoolers to thrive. Please help my preschoolers become successful!
