8th Grade Physics Through Flight

My students need 29 complete model rocket kits including an additional launch pad and engines for a second launch to compare data.

Launch my students into the 21st century with rockets! I teach at a preK-8 school that serves primarily impoverished children. I am responsible for all of 8th grade Math, Science and Health and hope to integrate our learning of linear equations with physics and space sciences through genuine experiences.

Recently, a NASA Mobile Learning Station visited our school, and students were immediately intrigued by the concepts surrounding flight and space exploration. They were frustrated that the virtual experience provided was where it had to end.

I hope to provide them the tools they need to understand the mechanics behind flight through a unit which would culminate with a rocket launch. The experience with these kits is more than during blast off. Through direct focus on the engineering method and design, students will have creative control over many aspects of this project during construction which will allow for their human ingenuity to be fostered and rewarded. Ultimately, these students would be so grateful to have rockets to not only construct, but then have real launch results to analyze. Funding these resources would allow students to have multiple launches, testing different variables associated with power, thrust and resulting altitude.

A rocket launch would not only serve my students educationally, but as a community in need, this event will bring families and surrounding neighbors to the school where they can see something positive produced from these amazing, capable students.
