Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Spanish to low-income kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students at a language academy in Chicago. Our school is severely overpopulated and a majority of my classes have 30 or more students.

I see most students twice per week for 40 minutes each period. During class, many of my students often ask me how to say or spell something in Spanish. I love and appreciate their eagerness to learn words beyond our weekly vocabulary; however, having 30 (sometimes more) students in a classroom makes answering every hand raised quite difficult, not to mention at times it interrupts our lesson.

Having access to easy-to-use Spanish/English dictionaries would limit the interruptions but still encourage students to learn new Spanish words and phrases. Additionally, students will learn how to use a dictionary to find the spelling of a word, how to pronounce a word, and other valuable dictionary skills.

Your generous donation will allow my eager, Spanish-loving students to gain dictionary skills and it will also eliminate the number of interruptions in our already short time together.
